Course Description:

In this pre-recorded lecture, Alice addresses the limits of uniqueness in friction ridge skin.  She explains how the friction ridge skin develops during fetal development, focusing on which features have a genetic blueprint and which features are governed by random processes.  We explore how these influences affect the specificity of the features and why this is critical in the comparison process.  Alice explains the development of identical twins (versus fraternal twins or siblings) and critical research in this area demonstrating how they can be similar and where to expect differences.  Finally, Alice discusses the concept of low specificity minutiae and close non-matching.  This is important information that must be considered when performing database searches.
